Chapter 1066 Money
Chapter 1066 Money
Like the swaying figures in the hospital corridors. She tried to struggle, but found her limbs heavy as if filled with lead, and her consciousness, as if soaked in warm water, blurry and dull. The nightmare arrived as expected. She was back to that stormy night, the light from the operating lights blinding her. Fu Shiyan lay on the operating table next door, his body riddled with tubes, his ECG monitor blaring with alarms. The doctor took a scalpel and cut a long gash in his chest. Blood gushed out, staining her vision red. "No!" she screamed, trying to throw herself forward, but an invisible force held her in place. She saw her own hand, holding a pen, signing her name on a document, his fingertips brushing against her cold cheek. "You're telling me now you'd rather die? Then what's the point of all I've done?" A flash of lightning suddenly streaked across the sky, its pale light instantly illuminating Fu Shiyan's face. His eyes were bloodshot, a frightening crimson. The scar under his left brow glowed an eerie red in the lightning, like an unhealed wound. "Just try and die." He said this very softly, but with an unquestionable determination, as if he was stating an established fact. The last syllable dissipated in the exploding thunder, shaking the ground slightly. Shen Zhiyi stared at him blankly, the rain blurred her vision, but she could clearly see the pain and madness in his eyes. She wanted to struggle, wanted to push him away again, but her body seemed to have all the strength drained away, and she could only let him hold her tightly, feeling the violent rise and fall of his chest. The rain was still pouring down, as if it was going to drown the whole world. The leaves of the sycamore tree were crackling, and the water on the ground was getting deeper and deeper, flooding over the ankles. Fu Shiyan's shirt was already soaked, and the cold fabric stuck to his skin, but it couldn't cool the warmth in his arms. He just held her like this, in the storm, as if holding on to the last straw. It was as if if he let go, she would disappear in this endless rain curtain like those fallen lily of the valley petals. Finally, Shen Zhiyi's tears could no longer be held back and burst out again. Mixed with the rain, they slid into Fu Shiyan's collar, burning his heart. She didn't know how long she had been crying, until her throat could no longer make a sound, until all the strength in her body was drained away, and she finally leaned on his shoulder tiredly, letting him hold her, searching for a faint ray of light in this desperate rain. After an unknown amount of time, the rain gradually subsided. A faint light shone through the sky, illuminating the messy sycamore leaves and lily of the valley petals on the ground. Fu Shiyan gently pushed Shen Zhiyi away, looking at her pale face and closed eyes, his heart suddenly sank. "Zhiyi? Zhiyi!" He patted her cheek, his voice filled with unprecedented panic. The only response he got was her weak breathing. Fu Shiyan quickly picked her up and turned to run towards the hospital. The person in his arms was very light, as light as a feather, but she weighed heavily on his heart. He looked down at her tightly closed eyes, with water droplets still hanging on her long eyelashes, like traces of tears. "Zhiyi, hold on," he murmured, his voice pleading, "Don't sleep, talk to me..." But Shen Zhiyi didn't respond, just leaned quietly in his arms, breathing weakly. Fu Shiyan ran faster, and the splashing water drew a long arc behind him. The sun finally broke through the clouds, shining on the wet street, reflecting a dazzling light. But this light could not shine into Fu Shiyan's heart, which was still dark. Only the warmth in his arms reminded him that he still had something to protect. He didn't know what would be waiting for them after this rainstorm. He only knew that he couldn't lose her, absolutely not. Just like three years ago on the operating table, he had only one thought - to keep her alive. Now, this thought is still clear and firm. No matter what the cost, he would keep her alive, even if she hated him, even if she could never forgive him. Because this was the promise he exchanged half his life for, and it was the belief that sustained him through countless painful nights. He couldn't let this belief completely collapse in this rainstorm. Fu Shiyan held Shen Zhiyi in his arms and ran towards the hospital under the gradually clearing sky. His back stretched out in the sunlight, with a kind of resolute courage, as if he was fighting a desperate battle with fate. And no one knew the outcome of this fight. The quilt was a dazzling white, covering the chest. She saw the hand exposed outside, pale without a trace of blood, and bruises on the knuckles from the infusion needle. There was a light pink scar on the wrist bone of that hand - the same shape as the scar on her tiger's mouth. At that time, she thought it was an illusion caused by anesthesia, until her fingertips touched the three words "Fu Shiyan" on the diagnosis, and she finally realized that it was not an illusion. The sound of Lin Shen tossing and turning came from the bedroom, and the bed board creaked, obviously he was not asleep either. Su Wan closed her eyes, yet she could still clearly hear her own heartbeat, and the subtle cracks in her heart that were slowly opening. She recalled how, back in college, Lin Shen had used a month's worth of living expenses to buy her a simple silver necklace. His hands trembled as he placed it around her neck, and he nervously asked if she liked it. Back then, though poor, they had boundless joy and aspirations. But now, they seemed to have more money, yet they had lost that joy. The endless piles of bills, like invisible shackles, not only locked their lives but also their once passionate love. Su Wan didn't know when she fell asleep, but she remembered having a long dream. In it, she and Lin Shen were still on the university playground, he carrying her on his back as they ran, the wind whistling in their ears, and they laughed like children. But as they ran, Lin Shen suddenly disappeared, leaving her alone on the empty playground, surrounded by pitch darkness and only by the cold wind. The next morning, Su Wan was awakened by the dazzling sunlight. She opened her eyes and found herself still lying on the sofa, covered with a thin blanket, which should be covered by Lin Shen in the middle of the night. The bedroom door was open, Lin Shen was gone, and the bills and calculator on the table were gone, as if everything last night was just a dream. Only the discarded duck leg in the trash can and the still unopened bottle of perfume on the coffee table reminded her that everything that happened last night was real. Su Wan slowly sat up and rubbed her sore eyes. The sunlight poured in through the window, casting bright spots on the floor, but it could not illuminate the haze that was gradually growing in her heart. She knew that some things might really be gone.
