Chapter 2177 - 2178: Monkey King
Chapter 2177 - 2178: Monkey King
"The fruit is right in the middle of that cliff face."Meng Shan pointed again to one side of the cliff face, and Lin Chen glanced over. Sure enough, from the crevice on the cliff emerged a fiery red herb, and on its branches and leaves, several red fruits condensed like a blazing sun.
That was undoubtedly the Fire Spirit Fruit Lin Chen needed.
"This was something our uncles brought us to find. They specifically warned us not to approach too closely inside. As long as we stand outside this boundary, the fire monkeys inside will not attack."
Then Meng Shan explained, her gaze dropping to a fine deep mark three or four meters ahead.
It split the earth, extending to both sides, like a delimiter demarking two different territories.
And beyond that fine mark, amidst the ancient trunks and leaves on either side of the clearing, a few glances pierced through the gaps in the leaves, containing vigilance, sweeping over Lin Chen and Meng Shan.
"Wait for me here, I'll be right back."
Lin Chen crouched slightly, gently patting Meng Shan's shoulders and warned her.
Ensuring Meng Shan's safety, Lin Chen wasn't too worried about the fire monkeys.
"Okay... but be careful, big brother. They say those fire monkeys are incredibly strong," Meng Shan, somewhat nervous, kept reminding Lin Chen.
"Okay."
Lin Chen replied with a comforting smile, not fearing those creatures.
After taking a deep breath, Lin Chen regained his spirit and then moved forward slowly.
As Lin Chen proceeded, a series of "wah wah" calls echoed continuously from between the trees on both sides, as if the fire monkeys were communicating in a language Lin Chen couldn't understand.
Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh.
After a few sounds, several figures leapt from the trees into the clearing.
The figures were human-sized, with extraordinarily long and strong arms, their entire bodies covered in fiery red fur, likely the reason for the name "fire monkeys."
Wah wah wah.
Again, a few agitated shouts. The fire monkeys clutched large rocks in their hands and hurled them viciously towards Lin Chen.
Perhaps they purposely threw wide, or maybe the fire monkeys' aim was indeed terrible. Thus, without Lin Chen having to sidestep, the stones flew past him, their force stirring Lin Chen's robe, making it flap loudly.
"Is it a warning?"
Lin Chen slightly frowned, stopping in his tracks, furrowing his brows.
If only the fire monkeys had attacked right away it would have been fine, but this approach aroused a sense of unwillingness within Lin Chen.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm only here for the Fire Spirit Fruit, and mean no harm. I hope you can allow me a path."
It's said that spiritual beasts have intelligence, so Lin Chen decided to try his luck, gesturing towards the Fire Spirit Fruit on the cliff as he spoke.
Wah wah wah.
Surprisingly, the fire monkeys seemed to understand Lin Chen's words. One shook its head, then suddenly started gesturing with its hands, finally clutching its throat and collapsing to the ground.
Just then, another fire monkey pointed at the Fire Spirit Fruit on the cliff, then picked up a stone fragment from the ground, pointed to that spot, and then tossed it into the mouth of the fallen fire monkey.
The fire monkey sprang up abruptly, using its sturdy arm to slap the other fire monkey atop the head, accompanied by angry cries.
"Are you saying your king is injured and needs the Fire Spirit Fruit to heal?" Lin Chen speculated with a deepening frown.
Several fire monkeys nodded vigorously.
Lin Chen's frown deepened. If that's really the case, he became even more reluctant to take the Fire Spirit Fruit.
"I don't know what ailment your king has. Perhaps I might be of some assistance. I have quite a few herbs here. If they can heal him, how about we trade them for the Fire Spirit Fruit?"
Lin Chen thought for a moment, then took out many herbs from the bundle at the hem of his garment. There were herbs Lin Chen had found, now holding onto a bit of hope. Lin Chen really didn't want to give up on the Fire Spirit Fruit, but neither did he wish to harm such intelligent fire monkeys.
The fire monkeys appeared somewhat silent, huddling together slightly and lowering themselves, discussing quietly amongst themselves, much like humans.
The "wah wah wah" sounds reached Lin Chen's ears from time to time, then one fire monkey, with eyes hidden beneath its fiery fur, stepped forward with a touch of skepticism.
Indicating Lin Chen to follow with a swing of its hefty arm.
Seeing this, Lin Chen held Meng Shan's small hand, bringing her along. Clearly, leaving Meng Shan outside alone made him uneasy.
While Lin Chen wasn't afraid—having seen many strange things—Meng Shan beside him was much more tense, her head slightly lowered, eyes fixed on the ground as she walked, hands sweating profusely. If not for Lin Chen holding her tightly, she would have probably turned and fled.
When she accidentally looked up, she happened to catch a glimpse of the leading fire monkey turning around, giving her a toothy grin. Its wide mouth opened, revealing sharp teeth that terrified Meng Shan, causing her to shudder.
"Don't be afraid..." Lin Chen softly comforted her, slightly soothing Meng Shan's nerves.
The fire monkey that turned seemed somewhat embarrassed, scratching its head and slightly lowering it, while the two beside it "wah wah wah" mockingly at it.
...
Before long, Lin Chen, accompanied by the fire monkeys, reached a secluded corner on the right side of the cliff.
It was a cave carved out beneath the cliff. Inside the cave, the dim white light from above illuminated it.
The cave was immense, extremely spacious. After Lin Chen and his group entered, they didn't feel cramped at all.
The cave was also very deep, seemingly extending far beneath the ground.
As they delved deeper, Lin Chen finally came to the end of the cave.
There, a broad platform lay.
In the center of the platform stood a several-zhang tall stone pillar. The pillar was extremely thick, gleaming an obsidian black, standing upright.
Bang bang bang.
Then sounds of "bang bang" echoed continually from the pillar, accompanied by the clanking of chains, sending a numbing sensation through the ears.
Lin Chen circled the platform, finally spotting a giant ape over two meters tall on the opposite side of the pillar.
But its limbs were completely bound by chains, fastening its strong body against the pillar.
Perhaps this was why the giant ape roared incessantly, its cries laced with agony. Its limbs struggled constantly against the chains that tightly bound it, unable to break free.
