Chapter 679: Memory Nodes
Chapter 679: Memory Nodes
“I don’t know. Think about it—given this situation, I can only gather information about this area, not the outside world.”The Red-Haired Girl answered with a somewhat helpless tone.
“So the thing causing this isn’t in the Experimental Center, but somewhere else?”
This was what worried Evans too. He didn’t think they could easily obtain information about it.
“I don’t know. I haven’t collected any relevant info. Maybe it’s inside the third Node, but I just can’t find it.”
If that weren’t the case, the Red-Haired Girl would have already resolved this mess long ago, and there’d be no need to wait until now.
“So you’re a useless waste who knows nothing?”
Evans looked at her with a somewhat complicated expression.
“No, I’m actually pretty strong. Later, I can go into the third Node with you. If you run into something you can’t handle, I can help you solve it.”
The Red-Haired Girl didn’t get angry. If someone else had said that to her, she might have directly ripped their brain out and squeezed it into paste.
“My memories are in the second Node?”
Evans asked cautiously.
If he had truly been dealing with troubles of this magnitude the whole time, then the second Node would be extremely dangerous.
He had to consider that he had zero memory of resolving these troubles—even if he were to go through it again, he might not pass safely.
“I’m not going in with you. I don’t even want to get close to that place. Who knows what kind of creepy stuff is in there?”
The Red-Haired Girl refused very firmly.
“I wasn’t planning on letting you in anyway.”
Evans didn’t want anyone else seeing his memories.
“Great, that’s settled. This is almost over, you should head back.”
The Red-Haired Girl watched as the prisoner chopped off her head, but it wasn’t over yet—the other party kept hacking away.
“I’m just cautious.”
Evans looked at the prisoner carving the young girl’s corpse into chunks. Though he agreed with the sentiment internally, he didn’t voice it.
“Make sure she comes in. If she doesn’t, she’ll lose her memories forever and never get them back.”
The girl suddenly shoved Evans, and his body began to fall downward.
When he snapped back to reality, Evans was already standing inside the laboratory. The brightness hadn’t returned, and he hadn’t gained any new memories.
The laboratory door opened automatically. Evans walked out and described the information he had obtained from the lab on the wall.
“So there’s another me inside? If I want to regain my memories, I have to go into the lab?”
Caroline hesitated. She felt like she didn’t like whatever was in there.
“That’s right. It’s your choice whether to go in or not. I’m not sure if the person inside has other motives.”
Evans sensed the Red-Haired Girl wasn’t a good person, but since it involved Caroline’s memories, he wouldn’t offer advice.
“…I want to go in. If someone else comes out instead of me, can you handle the problem here?”
Caroline was silent for a moment before writing a message on the wall.
“Don’t worry. I’ll handle it.”
Evans carved his reply. The laboratory door opened, then slowly closed.
“What a hassle.”
Evans checked his equipment thoroughly. He had thought these weapons wouldn’t be needed anymore, but now it seemed there was still a chance to use them.
“No need to be so tense. We’ve coexisted for a long time. I won’t lay a hand on her.”
Caroline suddenly appeared in front of Evans, pushing down the rifle in his hands.
“Why can I see you?”
Evans didn’t relax his guard. He stared at the Caroline before him, thinking about how to strike.
“The way we collect and transmit information is different. As long as I can pass my information to you, you can see me. Follow me.”
Caroline hopped ahead cheerfully, exposing her completely defenseless back, signaling for Evans to follow.
Evans followed behind Caroline. He felt like she wasn’t lying, but he didn’t know if his intuition was correct.
The two walked to the door of a laboratory. It was one of the Nodes Evans had found.
“What are you standing there for? Hurry up and go in to solve your problem. I’m not going in with you.”
Caroline opened the laboratory door and made a “please enter” gesture.
Evans glanced at Caroline, then stepped inside the lab.
After all, he would have to come in sooner or later anyway. At worst, he would waste one Simulation Attempt.
The laboratory door closed automatically. When Evans came to his senses, he was already sitting inside a running Ferris wheel cabin. Opposite him sat a black-haired, red-eyed girl.
“I don’t like what you look like right now. You don’t seem very smart.”
The girl spoke with a smile.
“…What do I look like right now?”
Evans looked at the glass window of the cabin. It reflected his face—still that young, white male’s face.
“Exactly what you see. I don’t like being influenced by others, and I won’t be influenced by anyone either.”
Little Ye looked out the window. The sky was filled with large amounts of gray-white ashes flickering with fiery light.
“Then you should know why I came in. Can I get my memories back now?”
Evans didn’t know what his relationship with this girl was, but he felt a certain warmth from her.
So it probably wasn’t a kill-or-be-killed relationship.
“Of course not. What, did you think I came here for nothing? If I wanted you to regain your memories, I wouldn’t have waited this long.”
Little Ye suddenly pulled out a dining table from beside her, with two bowls of rice noodles and two cans of iced cola on it.
“…I didn’t dismember you too, did I?”
Evans felt a bad feeling creeping in.
“No, that wasn’t me.”
Little Ye took a bite of the rice noodles. She really liked the taste too.
“Cough, cough. So what do you want?”
Evans also took a bite of the noodles. The spicy flavor made him cough a couple of times.
“It’s not about what I want, it’s about what you want. If you want the memories, I can give them to you right now.”
Little Ye replied very casually.
“…If I want to handle the situation here, I have to stay in my current state?”
Evans quickly understood what she meant.
“That’s right. Do you know how to deal with something completely unknown?”
Little Ye asked with a smile.
“…With a completely unknown method?”
Evans thought for a few seconds before answering.
“Exactly. That’s why you can’t reclaim your memories—because it would cause an information flow.”
Little Ye finished her rice noodles quickly and drank up all the broth base in the bowl.
“But that Caroline told me that if I don’t reclaim these memories before I leave, I’ll lose them forever.”
Evans didn’t like this feeling.
“She lied to you. She was afraid you’d take this chance to deal with her. The truth is, once this incident is over, everyone will regain their memories.”
Little Ye pulled out another bowl of rice noodles from beside her.
