"Ah, you too."
After hanging up with Jiang Yichen, I spent the night figuring out how to proceed with my next move with President Li's wife, Ye Huating.
Suddenly, she messaged me, "Let's meet tomorrow."
As I looked at the message, I fell into deep thought, with a premonition that the final showdown was about to begin.
A faint scent of perfume filled the hall, and soft jazz music flowed in the background, like a thin veil gently covering everyone's heart.
I sat in a corner booth, a cold Americano in my hand, my fingertips unconsciously tracing the rim. Sunlight streamed through the window, casting a long, thin line across the table, like an invisible knife slicing my thoughts in two.
Ye Huating was ten minutes late.
I glanced down at my phone; there were no new messages on the screen. I couldn't get through to her on the phone, and she hadn't replied to my WeChat messages. This wasn't like her. Ye Huating was always punctual; her unusual behavior today made me uneasy. I took a sip of coffee; the bitter taste spread across my tongue, but it couldn't suppress the inexplicable anxiety in my heart.
Finally, the wind chimes by the door rang softly. I looked up and saw Ye Huating hurrying in. She was wearing a beige trench coat, her hair was a little messy, and her face was as pale as a sheet. Her gaze swept around the coffee shop before finally settling on me, and she walked quickly over.
"Sorry, there was a bit of traffic on the way," she said softly, her voice slightly hoarse.
I nodded without asking any further questions. She was clearly not in good condition; the dark circles under her eyes and her slightly trembling fingers told me that she must not have slept well last night. I gestured to the waiter and ordered her a hot latte.
"Are you alright?" I asked softly, trying to keep my voice gentle, as if afraid of disturbing her.
She forced a smile, her fingers gripping the bag strap tightly: "It's okay, just... a little tired."
"The private room has been booked. Let's go upstairs first."
I went to the private room with her.
He didn't press her further, simply watching her silently. Her gaze wandered, as if she were avoiding something. After a while, she finally spoke, her voice so low it was almost inaudible: "I found out. He transferred most of his assets to overseas accounts, and there are problems with the company's accounts. I... I don't know what to do."
Her voice grew softer and softer until it was almost a whisper. I could feel her helplessness, like a bird trapped in a cage, seeing the exit but unable to fly out.
I took a deep breath and reached out to hold her hand. Her hand was icy cold, like a lifeless stone. "Don't worry," I said softly, my voice firm, "we'll figure something out together. Let's start with the company accounts and see if we can find any evidence."
She looked up, a glimmer of hope flashing in her eyes, but it was quickly replaced by worry: "But... he'll find out."
“He won’t find out,” I said firmly, tightening my fingers slightly to try and give her some strength. “Let’s be careful and take it slow.”
She hesitated for a moment, then finally nodded. We briefly discussed our plans and then went our separate ways. As I walked out of the hall, I glanced back at her retreating figure. Her shoulders were slightly hunched, as if weighed down by some invisible burden, making it hard for her to breathe.
When I got home, I slumped onto the sofa, my mind a jumbled mess. Suddenly, my phone rang; it was a video call from Jiang Yichen from abroad. I answered, and his familiar face appeared on the screen, a gentle smile on his face.
"How's today? Are you busy?" he asked, his voice tinged with concern.
I forced a smile and leaned my phone against the coffee table: "It's okay, just a little tired."
He frowned, leaned closer to examine my face, and asked, "You don't look well. Is something wrong?"
I shook my head, grabbed a cushion and hugged it to my chest: "It's nothing, I just have a lot of work to do."
He didn't press me further, only reminding me to take care of myself and not to overwork. I nodded, but felt a pang of guilt. He was far away overseas, and I didn't want him to worry, but I also knew he would notice something was wrong with me.
After hanging up the phone, I took a deep breath and refocused my attention on the plan. The next day, I contacted Xiao Zhang.
Some time ago, Xiao Zhang contacted me. He had had enough of Mr. Li's exploitation and had been hoping for an opportunity to bring Mr. Li to justice. When he learned that I was also investigating Mr. Li's illegal activities, he took the initiative to contact me and offered to help me. Today is the day we put our plan into action.
After hearing my plan, he agreed almost without hesitation: "I've disliked President Li for a long time, and this time I'm going to make him pay the price."
We began a covert investigation into the company's accounts. A few days later, we discovered the problem—General Manager Li had not only embezzled company funds but was also suspected of money laundering. This evidence was enough to ruin his reputation, but not enough. We needed more.
As we continued our investigation, we discovered that he was with that woman every day. On this particular day, the woman was wearing a red dress, her high heels clicking crisply on the marble floor. Mr. Li's hand was on her waist, and he wore a smile I had never seen before.
I hid in a corner, my heart pounding. Xiao Zhang whispered, "Should we follow them?"
I shook my head, took out my phone, aimed it at their backs, and pressed the shutter. Click! The image froze. The intimate moment between Mr. Li and that woman was forever captured.
I hid in the corner, my heart pounding like a rapid drumbeat, making my ears ring. Xiao Zhang, the employee who had long suffered exploitation at General Manager Li's company, was beside me. His eyes held both tension and a hint of vengeful resolve. "Should we follow them?" Xiao Zhang asked me in a low voice, as if afraid the wind would carry it away.
I frowned, my gaze fixed on the two figures disappearing into the distance. After a moment's thought, I lowered my voice and replied, "Don't rush. Following them rashly might alert them. Didn't you say you found out some new information at the company? Tell me about it."
Xiao Zhang nodded slightly, leaned closer to me, and tried to keep his voice from being overheard: "I overheard some senior executives chatting in the break room. They said that President Li has been meeting frequently with some mysterious people lately, as if he's preparing for a big, shady project. Those confidential documents might be related to this project."
“These documents seem crucial to us, concerning whether we can completely bring down President Li.” I bit my lower lip, a resolute glint in my eyes. “But this also means security will be tighter, and we’ll have to replan our operation. How much do you know about the new security measures in the office?”
