Chapter 39 Filial Piety to the Hairy One
Chapter 39 Filial Piety to the Hairy One
The four of them searched all the way to the riverbank.
The banks of the stream were overgrown with weeds, the riverbanks were soft, and in some places the current was very strong, making it difficult to find a place to stand.
Wen Chengjian led the way along the shore and finally found a secluded corner at a bend in the road.
This corner is a depression on the side of a small river, which looks like a step that someone deliberately dug out.
Judging by appearance, the steps can only accommodate two people.
Wen Chengjian said loudly, "Third Uncle, you and my sister wait for us on the steps. My second brother and I will go down and tidy up."
Wenwen approached the steps and saw that there was indeed no room for a third person.
She didn't argue with her eldest brother, but obediently sat down next to him and chatted with her second uncle.
Wen Chengjian handed Wen Chengbin a sharp stone.
"Second brother, use this."
"Great, bro. When did you prepare this? It's quite sharp."
Wenwen is multitasking; what is this 'sharp' thing?
She turned her head and saw the stone in her second brother's hand, and then she realized what was going on.
He took out two fruit knives and handed them over, saying, "Big brother, second brother, use these, they'll be faster."
Although it's a fruit knife from PXX wholesale, it's still considered a product of Space, enough to gut a pheasant.
Thinking about it, I took out another one. Anyway, there were still many left. If there was a chance, everyone could have one. Since they were just sitting there, I might as well give them all out.
"Third Uncle, here you go."
Wen Qikang hesitated, not daring to answer, "Wen'er, the steps are too narrow, I can't stand there."
Wenwen laughed, "Third Uncle, I'll cut you fruit, not chicken."
He also gave out a few pheasants and rabbits, saying, "Brother, take a few more; we have a lot of family members, so let's eat more tonight."
Wen Chengbin chuckled, "That's right, eat first, then fight. My older brother is skilled, isn't he, brother?"
Wen Chengjian glared at him, "You talk too much all day long. Shut your mouth and hurry up."
Wenwen smiled as she looked at her second brother's cowardly and timid demeanor.
My third uncle, standing beside me, was slicing a large peach with a fruit knife, picking out the wormholes inside.
Wow, Uncle San is really a competent logistics manager; he never forgets to work, no matter where he goes.
Wenwen suddenly thought of a question, "Third Uncle, do you think we should offer some filial piety to that Lord Zhu later?"
Upon hearing this, Wen Qikang stopped what he was doing, pondered for a few moments, and nodded.
“Yes, we need to, but we can say we can trade wild game for his things, and then use the money to buy some things.”
"why?"
"Although the yamen runners said there wasn't enough food, it wasn't that they didn't have any. They just wanted to make money off the food by selling it before they went to town to resupply."
Are people allowed to go into town to make purchases?
"It's allowed, but no one will buy too much. If the constables find out you have money, they'll find ways to make you pay until you've paid it all off."
"Third Uncle, how much should we exchange later? What should we exchange it for, and what should we buy?"
Wen Qikang didn't answer directly, but instead asked, "What do you think?"
Wenwen thought about it and realized that just eating meat wouldn't do; getting some dry rations was the right thing to do.
"Change to some white flour, buy a pot, we don't have a pot in our household."
Wen Chengjian scoffed, "Little sister, you're overthinking it. White flour is impossible, but brown rice is about right."
Wenwen wasn't annoyed by her older brother's sneer. She looked at the game they had prepared and thought it was pretty good; her two brothers were quite efficient.
A few more were thrown out.
Wen Chengbin was stunned. "Little sister, are we eating this much tonight? Isn't that a bit extravagant?"
"Second brother, are you stupid? Our family are rich landlords, we can have a dozen chickens in one meal, that's more than enough to live off."
Wenwen retorted to her second brother in displeasure.
Wen Qikang laughed at the joke, "Don't be angry. It's worth it to offer a few chickens as a token of respect and to make the whole family feel at ease for a day."
"Third Uncle, I understand. I'm just a little reluctant. The game that my brothers worked so hard to hunt is just going to go to them for nothing."
Wen Chengjian paused upon hearing this and comforted her, "It's alright, after you finish eating, I'll go fight again."
Wen Qikang steered the discussion back on track, "Wen'er, have you decided how many chickens you want to exchange for brown rice?"
Wenwen watched her two older brothers struggling to pluck the chicken feathers, and she felt quite tired.
She gritted her teeth and made a decision: "Give them the feathered ones, and keep the clean ones for ourselves to eat. We've already lost out."
All three of them burst out laughing, not expecting their niece/sister to be so possessive of her food.
Wen Chengbin interrupted, "Okay, Second Brother will make sure it's spotless, so everyone can eat with peace of mind and enjoy themselves. Don't be angry."
He added fearlessly, "Sister, don't give away the one with the flower wreath. Don't take the wrong one."
Uncle San didn't know anything about flower wreaths or anything like that. "What flower wreath? What's going on?"
Wen Chengbin perked up and kept working, chattering away, "Oh dear, look at me, I forgot to tell you about my sister's great achievements."
Wen Qikang urged with great interest, "Tell me quickly, let me have a laugh too."
Wen Chengjia also pricked up his ears to listen.
Then, Wen Chengbin, with his silver tongue, launched into a long, eloquent, and embellished story, recounting the tale.
He told the story of accidentally hitting a pheasant with a stone in a dramatic and suspenseful manner.
An ordinary, mundane event, transformed by his words, becomes both interesting and inspiring.
Wenwen discovered that her second brother was very good at deceiving people.
If she hadn't known that this was her own personal experience, she would have believed her second brother's nonsense.
Those who don't know the details might understand that the theme of this story is to encourage everyone that diligence can make up for lack of talent.
Wen Chengjian listened intently to his second brother's eloquent speech, the main character of which was none other than his own younger sister.
Although it sounded funny, I felt a pang of heartache. I turned to comfort her and said, "Little sister, I'll train you with my older brother later. I guarantee you'll hit the target every time."
After saying that, she splashed a handful of water in front of Wen Chengbin, saying, "This is all that's left, hurry up, your family is waiting."
Wen Chengbin chimed in, "Yes, yes, we can't keep everyone waiting with bated breath."
The four of them quickly got ready.
He strode confidently out of the woods.
Wen Qikang walked ahead, carrying a bundle of fruit on his back and a rabbit in his left hand.
The bundle contained mostly apricots, with a few sour little apples scattered around.
Those big, crisp, and sweet fruits must be hidden away; how can we just give them away? Wouldn't it be better for our own family to enjoy them?
These were Wenwen's exact words, which won everyone's unanimous agreement.
The rabbit in my hand is of medium size, neither thin nor fat, and its ears are still twitching, so it's obviously not quite dead yet.
Wenwen walked side by side with her third uncle. She was carrying a bundle of tricolor vines in her arms. There weren't actually many vines, but when folded and bundled together, they looked like a lot.
The two chatted as they walked.
Wen Chengjian and Wen Chengbin walked behind the two.
Wen Chengjian had four pheasants tied to his waist, two rabbits in his left hand, and a bundle of dry branches tucked under his right.
Some of the pheasants were still flapping their wings and struggling with their legs, probably clinging to life.
The Wencheng sword next to it is more conspicuous.
Two pheasants were tied around his waist, a rooster with a flower wreath was slung across his chest, he carried a bundle of tricolor vines in his left hand and a bundle of dry branches in his right.
This crossbody bag is quite unique, as it is woven from three-colored rattan.
No matter how much Wenwen objected, it was no use; the other three insisted that it had to be done this way.
Wen Chengjian was still smug, "I'll try to catch my grandparents' eye, preferably so they notice this historically significant pheasant at first glance. Then I can tell them about your glorious achievements, hahaha..."
Wenwen's objection was ineffective.
He became even more certain that the delusional ideas of the teenager were incomprehensible.
The group quickened their pace and walked out, gradually encountering other prisoners.
Everyone has some gains.
The two exchanged wary glances, refrained from interfering with each other, and walked away separately.
As dusk approached, the group of people who had gone out to find food finally came into the Wen family's sight.
