Chapter 387: Differential Treatment
Chapter 387: Differential Treatment
Vera Xavier wasn’t actually very good at acting cute. However, based on her recent experiences with Nathaniel Nathan, she had learned that this particular tactic was especially effective on him. Her current plan was to placate him first and then figure out a way to smooth things over completely.
How could Nathaniel Nathan not see what she was up to? His eyes were fixed on her, his face devoid of expression.
Alistair Forrest stared at Vera Xavier, dumbfounded. The coquettish, girlish way she was acting now was a world away from the domineering queen who had dealt with Susan Caldwell just moments ago. It was like she was a completely different person. What happened to her aloofness? Where was that unapproachable aura?
He considered himself a man of the world, but today had still managed to stun him. This woman was unlike any he had ever met. She was sharp, intelligent, composed, and knew exactly how to read a situation.
But he couldn’t help but feel a bit sour. She was so aloof with him, yet so docile and sweet in front of Nathaniel Nathan. Talk about unfair!
He decided he needed to make his presence known. He stepped up beside them and said, "Honey, you’re breaking my heart! You give him these stones for free, but you’re making me pay? This double standard really hurts!"
Vera Xavier: "..."
’Dude, can you not mess this up for me? Can’t you see I’m in the middle of calming someone down?’
Nathaniel Nathan shot Alistair Forrest a look, then asked Vera Xavier in a cold voice, "Honey? Who is he?"
Vera Xavier answered immediately, "I always do what you tell me. I don’t interact with strange men, and I don’t give them my name. He doesn’t know my name, so he just made up some random nickname for me. It’s awful!"
She shot Alistair Forrest a disdainful look. "As for who he is? I have no idea. I think he might have told me his name, but I don’t remember it. All I know is that his last name is Forrest and he’s some kind of jewelry merchant."
Her words made Nathaniel’s expression soften slightly, but Alistair was so frustrated he could have coughed up blood. ’Is it really okay to be so obviously biased?’
Alistair Forrest’s two bodyguards shrugged. Their boss’s rival in love was far too powerful. They’d bet a bag of chips their boss was going to lose this round.
Nathaniel Nathan said coolly, "A jewelry merchant from Marinus with the surname Forrest? Alistair Forrest?"
Alistair Forrest asked, surprised, "How do you know my name?"
"I was the one who had Ronan Tate sell you that piece of Emperor Green you bought in Crestfall," Nathaniel Nathan said slowly.
Alistair Forrest recalled what Vera Xavier had said earlier. "Don’t tell me that piece of Emperor Green was also found by Honey?"
The moment Nathaniel Nathan heard the word "Honey," his expression darkened. Alistair, however, seemed completely oblivious. He looked at Vera Xavier with a wide grin and said, "Honey, you’re incredible! How do you do it?"
When Vera Xavier saw Nathaniel’s face darken, her own expression turned grim. "A family trade secret," she said coldly. "And I’m not telling."
Nathaniel shot her a sidelong glance. ’A family trade secret? Yeah, right. Keep making things up.’
Alistair, however, couldn’t care less if it was a family secret or some other kind of skill. As long as she had the ability, it was her own talent. So, he said earnestly, "Honey, I’d like to offer you a high-paying position as the chief stone-sourcing consultant for my company. What do you say?"
"I say no," Vera Xavier refused flatly. She had only wanted to quietly try her luck with a few stones on this trip, make some quick cash, and use it to open her pharmaceutical factory. But she hadn’t expected to run into Susan Caldwell. She’d lost her temper for a moment, and the resulting commotion had gotten a little out of hand.
